The name Suma Oriental refers to the writings of Tomé Pires, a Portuguese apothecary who became an ambassador to China in the 16th century.

He authored the first detailed account of the remote and closed-off lands of Southeast Asia, including the origin story of sandalwood, which originally grew on the Sumba Islands — now part of modern-day Indonesia.

These writings would go on to inspire, even as early as 1934, the renowned perfumer Coty, who created the fragrance A Suma to capture the mood of moonlit Balinese beaches.

Suma Oriental is a hypnotic fragrance, where patchouli is cloaked in creamy and woody notes — deep, mysterious, and sensual.
