Who rides beside you in the forest on the darkest night?

In Victor Hugo's poem "À quoi songeaient les deux cavaliers dans la forêt" (What Two Horsemen Were Thinking in the Forest), the narrator says: "Hermann seemed to me like a shadow."

We all have a shadow — even in the forest at night. You might call yours by another name: your invisible friend. Your conscience. Your soul. Perhaps even your second self. Your shadow might have a name — like Hermann.

Or perhaps your shadow is your perfume.

It is your companion. You may argue with it. You may compete with it. It might challenge the limits of your beliefs. You might debate the most delicate aspects of existence.

But you cannot be without it. It is your alternate self.

You move through life contemplating what it all means. You ask questions that have no answers. And when uncertainty overwhelms you, look to your shadow.

Maybe you'll find an answer. Maybe you won’t. But at the very least, you'll have an interesting conversation.
